              Son Luka with Haunani
Son Luka, with HaunaniOnce upon a time, there was a dog named Haunani and she loved chickens..." In the summer of 2002, I moved to Hawaii from Pacifica, CA. My son Luka was 15 at the time... Luka wants a dog. Have you ever heard of 'love at first sight'? Luka took one look at a cute, black and white Jack Russell Rat Terrier and she is "it" for him - and for me. She looked like a gentle and loving dog. We, two folks from the city bought three chickens. Haunani liked the chickens. We all liked the chickens. Everyone had a great time for at least a month and then, it happened!

I heard chicken's screaming, it was not squawking. Luka and I ran outside and there were feathers everywhere, and Nani had a chicken in her mouth. She looked like a lion and she was walking off with her kill. Luka was chasing her into the jungle. I was hysterical. The chicken's were all gone. Within a few weeks, Luka was sure he could "change" Nani. He pleaded and he and I went and bought two more chickens and a beautiful rooster. Luka put Nani on a runner and the chickens on the other side. Life is good in Hawaiian Paradise Park.

AND THEN IT HAPPENED!

This time I'm not at home but Luka is and so is Nani. Nani managed to get out of her collar, "Nani's was nobody's fool"! She ran for those chickens and there was no stopping her. The carnage was everywhere. It was awful, it was tragic, it was gross, and I cried. Luka said many times, "I'm sorry mom, I'm sorry"! Nani with the feather on her nose and her wagging tail walked off into the jungle but this is not the last of our chicken's stories.

Sometimes I would go back to the Bay Area to do some work.  Luka's dad and I were talking on the phone and I ask him, "How is it going"? And I hear squawking, but not screaming. Luka's dad said, "Well, I see a chicken running and I see Nani running and I see Luka running. But everyone is okay". Luka was able to stop Nani. There is no carnage today. Shortly after I return, Nani achieves her goals.

With a heavy heart and with Luka pleading, "Mom, this time, I know what to do". This time we get baby ducks and a couple of chickens and one rooster. Nani loves the baby ducks and they sleep with her. We still keep Nani separate from the chickens but to the ducks, she is a mom. They trust her, like we trust her. Time goes on and the ducklings become ducks.

One night, I change the ducks’ water and Nani stands with us. I go inside and I heard something, as noise, some animal I don’t recognize. I run outside and Nani has one of the ducks by the throat, the other has flown away. I pried our duck, our little friend, out of Nani’s mouth and she is dead. Oh! I cried and cried. Nani looked at me. “What are you doing?” her face said. You took my dinner”.

The next day I am at the post office. I am trying to think of other things, but I am devastated. I loved that duck. The mail clerk gives me a roll of stamps with dogs and cats on them and that is all it takes. I am wailing! “What is the matter?” the clerk asked. “My dog killed my duck last night”, I cried. Everyone that was in line got involved. In Hawaii there is no wall.

“You need to tie a dead chicken around Nani’s neck and leave it there until she can’t stand it anymore. That will cure her,” one person advised.

Another person asked. “Where is your chicken coop?”

“We don’t have a chicken coop, we have wire.” I said.

“You have to have a chicken coop,” another person in line said.

“Once a chicken killer, always a chicken killer,” a woman in line said. “You will have to make a choice.

Out of the mouths of babe, comes a poem song by an eight year old Malia:

A Poem Song for Haunani

a dog that can live
she can do many things
before the sun rising and the moon shining
she can fight like a warrior in war
she is strong like a lion
good eye sight like a hawk
She is golden
and treasure
and we all count on her
she never gives up
because she is the chosen one
