Episode 171: Indigenous Wisdom Stories: What the Dragonflies Asked Her to Hold

indigenous wisdom podcast Jun 03, 2026

What does it mean to walk in both worlds when the outer culture is pulling harder than ever in one direction?

That is the question a listener sent in. And Julia it live — by pulling a card. Grandmother Dragonfly arrived: *I am big in energy and small in movement. I nurture you and those around you. Know that you are mine to hold.*

This episode is about the Dragonfly Card Deck — what it is, where it came from, and how to work with it. Julia traces the whole arc: the vision that arrived in Hawaii nearly twenty years ago, during one of the loneliest seasons of her life; the fifty-two texts she channeled, one for each dragonfly; the false starts and the long wait; and the collaboration with artist Sara that finally brought the cards into physical form.

The deck is small enough to hold in one hand, fifty-two rounded cards, each one a wing. Julia walks through her own practice — how she approaches the deck not looking for answers but for orientation. What it means to pull a card when you are stuck in the human existence of being and need confirmation that you are still here, still seen. She shares what others have found: one card on a Sunday morning, one card at the start of a day, the cards spread across an altar, the cards spread across a kitchen table that becomes ceremony.

The episode closes with an invitation: a June 24th gathering, an intimate card deck session for anyone who feels the call to experience this work in community. No prior experience with the deck required.

*"Each time someone listens to one of these episodes, or holds a card, they are added to the song. And the song continues."*
